Why SHAMBLES? Some restaurants are about rushing through dinner. SHAMBLES has always been about staying for one more glass.
Some restaurants are remembered only for the food they serve. The very best are remembered for how they make people feel. Our fire is lit in winter. Wisteria hangs overhead in summer. Music and conversation drift through the rooms, bottles are recommended across the table and somehow a quick dinner becomes a long evening.
That feeling doesn’t happen by accident.
For more than four decades we’ve built SHAMBLES around warm hospitality, seasonal Italian cooking prepared fresh in-house, handmade pasta and a wine programme devoted to discovery. The building has history. The rooms have character. Our kitchen garden grows with Italy in mind. Nothing feels overly polished – and we like it that way!
Relaxed, welcoming and full of life, yet always serious about food, wine and looking after people.
SHAMBLES first opened its doors in 1983, quickly becoming part of the fabric of Teddington. Founded by Franco and Jackie Langella, the restaurant has welcomed generations of local families, visitors and friends around the table.
The Langella family’s story in hospitality began even earlier. In 1972, Franco and Jackie opened Spaghetti Junction, a much-loved Italian restaurant that served the local community for nearly three decades before closing in 1999. Even today, many guests visiting SHAMBLES fondly remember Spaghetti Junction, often sharing stories of family celebrations, first dates and memorable meals enjoyed there. It’s a reminder that great hospitality isn’t measured in years, but in the memories it creates.
Since 2006, SHAMBLES has been run by siblings Massimo and Margherita Langella, who continue to build on everything their parents created while guiding the restaurant forward with fresh ideas and a commitment to continual improvement. Today, the focus remains the same as it always has been – genuine hospitality, exceptional ingredients and creating a place where people genuinely enjoy spending time.
For more than 50 years, the Langella family has been welcoming guests to the table in Teddington. We’ve welcomed generations of families, friends and visitors to share seasonal Italian cooking, exceptional wines and genuine hospitality in the heart of Teddington.
True Italian cooking begins with high quality, fresh ingredients. Our menus evolve throughout the year, taking inspiration from the changing seasons rather than fixed recipes. Handmade pasta is prepared in-house, fresh fish arrives daily, and many herbs, vegetables and edible flowers come directly from our kitchen garden. We work closely with trusted British producers alongside exceptional Italian ingredients, combining traditional techniques with a deep respect for seasonality.
Nothing is added simply for show. Everything has a reason to be there.
Wine has always been part of the SHAMBLES story.
Today our cellar is home to one of the UK’s most extensive by-the-glass selections, with more than 40 wines available through Coravin and carefully selected artisan producers from across Italy and beyond. Whether discovering an unfamiliar grape variety or enjoying a treasured classic, we believe wine should feel exciting, approachable and shared. It’s why so many evenings begin with one glass and end with another recommendation.
Respecting ingredients also means respecting where they come from.
We’re proud to have achieved Green Mark certification and continue investing in more sustainable ways of operating, from reducing food waste and improving energy efficiency to sourcing responsibly and growing more produce ourselves. Sustainability isn’t something we do for recognition. It’s simply part of looking after the restaurant, our community and the generations that will enjoy SHAMBLES after us.
Over four decades we’ve had the privilege of being part of thousands of stories. First dates. Marriage proposals. Wedding anniversaries. Birthday parties. Family celebrations. Business lunches. Quiet Tuesday evenings that somehow became unforgettable.
We’ve watched children become parents, welcomed grandchildren of our earliest guests and celebrated countless milestones alongside our community. For us, that’s the greatest achievement of all.
Our commitment to food, wine and hospitality has earned recognition nationally and internationally, including:
Rather than changing who we are, these recognitions simply reinforce what we’ve always believed – that independent restaurants can achieve extraordinary things through consistency, care and passion.
Family-run since 1983. Still welcoming the next generations. Just the sort of place people don’t want to leave.
